ELD tracking and shipper visibility

February 19, 2026 · 7 min read

The ELD mandate was written for hours-of-service compliance. Its side effect was a GPS-connected telematics device in essentially every commercial tractor in the country — and that changed what shippers can reasonably expect to see.

Federal rules require most interstate commercial drivers to record hours of service electronically, which means nearly every tractor carries GPS telematics.

What good visibility looks like

  • Live GPS position, not a check-call transcribed by hand
  • ETA that accounts for remaining hours-of-service, not just distance
  • Automated arrival and departure timestamps at each stop
  • Proactive exception alerts before the appointment is missed
  • Temperature data streamed alongside location on reefer loads

Why HOS-aware ETAs matter more than raw distance

A truck 400 miles from your dock with two hours of drive time left is not arriving tonight. ETAs computed from distance alone systematically mislead planners; ETAs computed from remaining legal driving hours do not.

Questions to ask before you book

Ask which ELD platform the carrier runs, whether tracking is available on every load or only on request, and whether temperature data is included on reefer freight. Maas Logistics runs Samsara fleet-wide, which is why tracking is standard rather than an upcharge.

Questions we get on this

Most interstate commercial drivers subject to hours-of-service recordkeeping must use a registered electronic logging device, with limited exemptions.

It should not. Once a fleet runs telematics, sharing position data is a configuration choice rather than a new cost.

On reefer loads, yes — modern telematics can report set point and return-air temperature alongside GPS position.
