How a lease-on works with a Dallas carrier
When you lease on, you run your truck under Maas Logistics' operating authority (USDOT 3179194) instead of your own. The carrier provides the freight and dispatch; you provide the truck and run the loads. It's the middle ground between driving for a company and running your own authority. You keep your equipment and your business decisions without having to find every load yourself.
Dallas is a strong place to run a truck from. I-35E, I-45, I-20, I-30 and US-75 all meet in the metroplex, and DFW distribution centers ship dry van and reefer freight in every direction. Leasing to a carrier based in North Texas keeps your business close to that freight.
What 87–90% of gross means
Gross is the revenue on the load. On percentage pay, the owner-operator keeps 87–90% of it and the carrier keeps the rest. Where you land in that range depends on your setup, and Sergio explains exactly how it applies to your truck when he calls.
Percentage of gross is not the same thing as CPM. As an owner-operator you also carry your truck's operating costs, so compare lease-on offers on what you keep after expenses, not just the headline percentage. Our guide to owner-operator percentage-of-gross pay and the owner-operator lease-on guide for Texas walk through the numbers.
Questions to ask any Dallas lease-on
Before you sign with any carrier in Dallas, get clear answers to these:
- What exactly does the percentage apply to, and is anything taken out before settlement?
- Which costs are yours: fuel, tolls, insurance, permits, maintenance?
- How are loads offered, and what happens if one doesn't work for you?
- How and when are settlements paid, and how are they itemized?
- What happens to any escrow if you leave?
Owner-operators keep 87–90% of gross. Company drivers start at 50+ CPM dry van, 60+ CPM reefer.
Dry van or reefer: choosing your freight
Maas hauls dry van and refrigerated full truckload. Dry van is general freight in a 53-foot enclosed trailer: retail goods, packaged products, paper and similar loads. Reefer is temperature-controlled freight such as produce, dairy and frozen food, which means pre-cooling, holding set points and keeping temperature records. Don't own a trailer yet? Read the owner operator trailer rental page before you apply.
Company driver or owner-operator?
If you're on the fence, compare the two side by side. A company driver runs Maas equipment and earns per mile: 50+ CPM on dry van and 60+ CPM on reefer. An owner-operator runs their own truck and keeps 87–90% of gross, but also carries the truck payment, fuel, maintenance and the other costs of running a business. Percentage pay rewards owner-operators who manage costs carefully and keep the truck productive; CPM gives a company driver a simpler paycheck to predict. Neither is right for everyone, and Sergio can walk through both with you when he calls.
Who should apply
This fits Dallas-area owner-operators with a Class A CDL and their own truck who want to run OTR in the 48 states and would rather lease on than manage their own authority. It also fits DFW company drivers who are close to buying a truck and want to understand lease-on numbers first.
No truck? Our company driver jobs start at 50+ CPM on dry van and 60+ CPM on reefer.
