What a reefer driving job involves

Reefer freight is anything that has to stay at a set temperature: fresh produce, dairy, meat, frozen food, beverages and some non-food products. The trailer carries its own refrigeration unit, and the driver is responsible for running it right. That responsibility is why reefer pays more per mile than dry van at Maas: 60+ CPM versus 50+ CPM.

Most reefer loads follow the same checklist:

  • Pre-cool the trailer to the set point on the paperwork before you back into the door.
  • Confirm the set point and the mode, continuous or cycle, that the shipper requires.
  • Check product temperature at pickup when the shipper allows it, and note problems before you sign.
  • Watch the unit and the reefer fuel on the road; temperature problems are cheaper to catch early.
  • Keep the temperature records the shipper and receiver ask for, and deliver on appointment.

Texas reefer freight and the corridors behind it

Texas is one of the biggest reefer markets in the country. Produce crosses the border at Laredo and through the Rio Grande Valley ports near Pharr, moves north on the interstates, and much of it passes through or near Dallas–Fort Worth on its way to grocery and food distribution centers across the 48 states. From our Melissa home base on US-75, the metroplex's main interstates (I-35, I-45, I-20 and I-30) are a short run south.

Seasons matter in reefer. Rio Grande Valley produce has its own calendar, and food volume climbs into the fall and winter holidays. Our Texas produce shipping seasons guide explains the pattern from the shipper side, which helps drivers understand why some months run busier than others. Lane examples include Melissa to Laredo and Texas to California.

What receivers expect from a reefer driver

Grocery and food distribution centers check reefer loads closely. Receivers may take product temperatures at the door and compare them with the set point and the unit's download. A load that arrives out of range can be refused, which costs the shipper, the carrier and the driver time. That's why good reefer drivers treat the paperwork as part of the job: the set point on the bill of lading, the seal number, pickup and delivery times and any temperature notes. Those habits are what separate a reefer driver from someone who just pulls a reefer trailer.

Company drivers start at 50+ CPM dry van, 60+ CPM reefer. Owner-operators keep 87–90% of gross.
