What dry van driving involves

Dry van is the most common trailer on the road: a 53-foot enclosed box for freight that doesn't need temperature control. Think retail and consumer goods, shelf-stable packaged food, paper, building products and boxed parts. There's no refrigeration unit to manage, but the fundamentals still decide whether a driver does well: on-time pickups and deliveries, clean paperwork and secure loads.

On a typical dry van load you handle:

  • A pre-trip inspection, plus a check that the trailer is clean, dry and free of holes before loading.
  • Live loads, where you wait at the dock, and drop-and-hook, where you swap a loaded trailer; you'll see both in truckload.
  • Seal numbers and bills of lading that match before you leave the shipper.
  • Load bars or straps so freight doesn't shift on the road.
  • Delivery appointments at distribution centers, many of which run on tight windows.

Why Texas is dry van country

Dallas–Fort Worth is one of the largest distribution markets in the country. Warehouses cluster along I-35W near AllianceTexas in north Fort Worth, along I-20 and I-45 in southern Dallas, and up the US-75 and SH-121 corridors in Collin County. That freight leaves Texas in every direction: I-45 to Houston, I-35 to Oklahoma City and San Antonio, I-30 toward Arkansas and I-20 toward Louisiana and the Southeast.

Our lane pages show examples of the dry van freight Maas runs out of DFW, from Dallas to Houston to longer OTR runs like DFW to Memphis and DFW to Chicago.

What makes a strong dry van driver

Dry van freight looks simple, but receivers notice the details. A driver who checks the trailer floor before loading, verifies the piece count when the shipper allows it, and records the seal number heads off most freight claims before they start. On the road, the risks are the ones every OTR driver manages: weather, traffic around big metros like Dallas, Houston and Atlanta, and hours of service. Planning fuel and breaks around delivery appointments keeps you legal and on time. At delivery, a signed bill of lading with any exceptions noted protects you and the carrier. These habits matter more than the trailer type, and they carry straight over to reefer.
