How CDL School Graduates Can Evaluate a First Carrier in Texas (Dallas–DFW, 2026)

· By Maas Logistics Dispatch

Who this guide is for

You just finished CDL school in Texas — or you are about to — and every recruiter on the phone sounds the same. Some promise big miles. Some push lease-purchase. Some want you on a truck tomorrow with paperwork you do not understand. This guide is for graduates and near-graduates who want a practical way to compare a first carrier before they sign anything. It is written from an asset-based dry van and reefer carrier based in Melissa, Texas (DFW), not from a school or a broker.

What "first carrier" really decides

Your first year sets habits: how you read a rate confirmation, how you talk to dispatch, how you handle a late shipper, and whether you burn out on OTR before you learn the job. Regional vs OTR is one fork — see our guide on regional vs OTR CDL jobs Dallas. Equipment is another: dry van and reefer are different day-to-day jobs — dry van company driver jobs Texas vs reefer CDL driver jobs Texas. Pay structure is a third: cents per mile versus percent of gross — CPM pay explained.

Questions to ask before you accept an offer

Ask for answers in writing. If a recruiter will not put basics in an email or packet, that is already a signal.

  1. Who owns the trucks? Asset-based carriers run their own power. Brokers and some "carriers" hand freight to someone else. If you are a company driver, ask whose name is on the tractor and whose authority is on the door.
  2. Forced or non-forced dispatch? For owner-operators especially, know who picks the load and what happens if you refuse — forced dispatch vs non-forced dispatch.
  3. What is the pay unit? Company driver CPM (loaded/empty rules) or OO percent of gross? Ask what is included and what is not. Do not treat a verbal weekly number as a contract.
  4. Dry van, reefer, or both? Temperature work adds set points, continuous vs cycle, and receiver rules. Know what you are signing up to haul.
  5. Where is home base and how does home time work? Get the policy in writing. Do not invent expectations the packet does not state.
  6. What ELD and safety tools are required? Ask which ELD is registered and what happens if a device is revoked. Maas runs Samsara ELD fleetwide on late-model Cascadias — confirm whatever carrier you choose uses a currently registered device.
  7. How do I apply and what does "apply" mean? At Maas, you use the website forms. Sending an application means we received your info; a manager will call to review. It is not a hiring decision and it is not a pre-qualification.

Company driver vs owner-operator after school

Most school graduates start as company drivers: the carrier owns the truck, you drive, and pay is usually CPM. Owner-operator paths (your truck or a lease arrangement) shift risk and paperwork onto you — percent of gross, fuel, maintenance, and authority questions. If you are not ready for that stack, start company and learn the freight. Maas company drivers: 50+ CPM dry van / 60+ CPM reefer on OTR 48-state dry van and reefer full truckload out of Melissa. Owner-operators: keep 87–90% of gross with non-forced dispatch. Apply: CDL A jobs Dallas and owner operator jobs Texas.

Red flags that waste a new CDL

  • Recruiter will not put pay unit, dispatch rules, or home-time policy in writing.
  • Pressure to sign a lease-purchase the same day you pass your skills test.
  • Vague "you'll make great money" with no CPM or percent formula.
  • No clear answer on whose authority and whose insurance cover the load.
  • Asking you to invent experience or skip DOT medical card requirements.

FAQ

Do I need experience after CDL school to apply at Maas?

Requirements are reviewed by a manager after you submit your info. Do not invent experience on the form. Use the company-driver or owner-operator apply page and wait for the call.

Should a new graduate start OTR or regional?

It depends on home-time needs and how you learn. Read regional vs OTR CDL jobs Dallas before you commit.

Is CPM or percent of gross better for a first year?

They are different jobs. CPM is common for company drivers; percent of gross is common for owner-operators. Start with CPM pay explained.

What if a school pushes one carrier only?

You still own the decision. Compare equipment, dispatch, and pay unit in writing across more than one carrier before you sign.

Does submitting an application mean I am hired?

No. At Maas, submit means we got your info and a manager will call. It is not a hiring decision.
