AAA diesel hits all-time high as fleets absorb empty-mile fuel pain
FreightWaves reports AAA’s national daily retail diesel average set Friday at $5.85 per gallon, breaking the prior all-time mark of $5.82 from June 2022 after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The last four days alone added nearly 25 cents per gallon. Ultra-low sulfur diesel futures had climbed into record territory earlier in the week before softening midday Friday, but pump prices still reflect Hormuz uncertainty.
Truckload fuel surcharges cover loaded miles; empty and backhaul miles — often around 12–13% of truckload miles — do not.

Reefer spot rates jump nearly 16 cents as late Labor Day distorts seasonality
FTR told FleetOwner refrigerated spot rates jumped almost 16 cents last week — about 32% above last year — while refrigerated loads rose nearly 12%. DAT put national reefer linehaul at $2.69 per mile, up 6 cents. Dry van was mixed (FTR up about 2 cents; DAT down 2 cents to $2.19). Flatbed slipped to its lowest FTR level since April even as loads rose. Analysts flag this year’s late Labor Day as a calendar distortion that can pull produce and grocery freight into unusual weeks.

Three days left: Sept. 8 hard stop for July’s revoked ELDs
FMCSA’s July 9, 2026 notice removed ten devices from the registered ELD list — Ontime Logs iosix, LAST MINUTE ELD, Porter ELD, Zee HOS Compliance, EV ELD IOSIX, Light and Travel ELD, PREMIERRIDE LOGS, 2BRO ELD, 305 ELD, and TT ELD 40 — and set September 8 as the replacement deadline. After that date, roadside use of a revoked device is treated as operating without an ELD and can trigger out-of-service under CVSA criteria. Carriers were told to stop the revoked devices, use paper or logging software during the swap, and install a still-registered unit.
What it means: Maas runs Samsara ELD. Drivers and shippers should still verify any partner’s device against FMCSA’s current registered list before Monday. Cheap workaround boxes are a roadside and insurance problem, not a savings.
Duffy: ELD cheaters push rates down and squeeze honest fleets
On Sept. 2, 2026, DOT Secretary Sean Duffy tied hours-of-service fraud to rate pressure while announcing deeper DOJ/DHS cooperation against trucking fraud. Overdrive notes more than 300 carriers’ drivers have been hit with the new out-of-service code for remote ELD tampering since April. Duffy argued fraudsters who run past legal hours undercut small fleets that cannot compete on illegal miles, and warned carriers tied to revoked devices or unqualified schools will face the same task-force scrutiny.

FBI probes dark-web dump claiming 153M licenses, including CDL labels
FreightWaves reports the FBI is looking into a dark-web service that advertised roughly 153 million U.S. and Canadian driver’s license records, with some entries labeled CDL or ECDL. Researchers said the seller claimed continuous access to identity-verification systems; the service later went offline after reporting. No public evidence yet ties the dump to a named carrier breach or to cargo theft. Security analysts warn a CDL is often treated as an authorization token at docks — a real-looking credential can pass a scan without proving the person belongs on that load.
What it means: Shippers and warehouses: match the live person to the approved carrier and load, not only the plastic. Carriers: tighten pickup ID checks. Drivers: watch for identity-theft flags on your CDL record.
