Two days left: July’s revoked ELDs hit out-of-service Monday
FMCSA’s July 9, 2026 notice removed ten devices from the registered ELD list — Ontime Logs iosix, LAST MINUTE ELD, Porter ELD, Zee HOS Compliance, EV ELD IOSIX, Light and Travel ELD, PREMIERRIDE LOGS, 2BRO ELD, 305 ELD, and TT ELD 40 — and set September 8 as the hard replacement date. After Monday, roadside use of a revoked unit is treated as no ELD and can trigger CVSA out-of-service. Carriers were told to stop the revoked boxes, run paper or logging software during the swap, and install a still-registered device. A separate August batch carries a later October 6 window — do not confuse the two.
What it means: If your partner still runs a July-revoked device, Monday is the cliff. Maas runs Samsara ELD. Shippers: ask the carrier which unit is in the truck before you tender. Drivers: paper logs are temporary; a registered ELD is the lasting fix.
Self-cert ELDs: 1,020 U.S. providers vs 42 in Canada
On FreightWaves, Mark Hazelwood (Assured Telematics / Conversion Interactive) tied hours-of-service fraud to the U.S. self-certification model. He put U.S. ELD providers at about 1,020 versus 42 in Canada, where third-party certification has been required since 2019. He said the administration is moving toward mandatory third-party ELD certification and that a full standup could take at least 12 months even under a best case. Enforcement so far — more than 20,000 drivers out of service and about 28,000 illegal CDLs canceled, per his figures — may not move capacity alone, but the certification threat could push manipulable providers out.

Werner CEO: ELD purge pulls 15 trucks of capacity when you yank 10
Transport Topics reports Werner Enterprises CEO Derek Leathers told the Deutsche Bank Chicago Industrials Summit that FMCSA’s ELD purge is tightening real truckload capacity. He said at least 56 ELD models were deemed noncompliant in 2026 after 32 in 2025, and that updated vetting has stopped nearly 400–500 new entrants that failed a basic certification sniff test. His line: 10 trucks were able to behave like 15 on manipulated hours — so removing those ten is more like removing fifteen.

Truck jobs jump 4,800 in August; warehouses still sliding
FreightWaves’ John Kingston notes the September 4 BLS release: truck transportation employment rose 4,800 jobs to 1,470,300 — highest since October — while still about 10,000 below a year earlier. Long-distance truckload jobs (July lag) sat at 501,400, up nearly 5,000 since January but down from 505,300 a year ago. Warehouse jobs fell another 2,600 to 1,837,400. Arrive Logistics’ David Spencer flagged muted Labor Day rate volatility as context, not a full turn.
What it means: Hiring is firming in places without looking like a boom. Drivers shopping carriers: ask about equipment age, non-forced dispatch, and how fuel is paid on empties — not just a CPM flyer.
Record $5.85 diesel starts showing up in the grocery aisle
Transport Topics (AP) reports AAA’s national average diesel hit a record $5.85 a gallon on Sept. 4 as the Iran war and Hormuz disruption keep distillate tight. Regular gas averaged $4.15 — above $4 on Labor Day for the first time, AAA said — but still below the 2022 gas peak. Food economists note perishables move first: July grocery prices were up 2.7% year over year, with seafood +7% and fresh fruit +4.9%. Fuel is roughly 15–30% of food cost per the Independent Grocers Alliance; Amazon, UPS, FedEx, and USPS already layered fuel/logistics fees earlier in the war.
